November 2003: Meningococcal meningitis in Moscow

There have been recent reports of a rise in the number of cases of meningococcal meningitis in Moscow. During 2003, 268 cases, most of which have been in children, and 22 deaths (including 9 children) have been reported. This is approximately twice the average number of cases. In addition, many of the cases have been reported at the end of the summer and early autumn, which is earlier than the usual season of February to March.

Laboratory reports from Moscow have identified the meningococcal type A strain as the cause of 90% of cases that have been serotyped. A vaccination campaign has been initiated in the city in particular for children aged 18 months to 8 years, to reduce spread of the disease.

Recommendation for travellers to Moscow from the UK

  • The risk to an individual traveller appears to be related to the degree to which they are in close contact with the local population, but is believed to be very low.
  • Vaccine should be considered for travellers to Moscow who will teach in schools, attend university or other courses, frequent crowded bars and clubs, or work in a medical setting.

This recommendation remains in effect until the end of March 2004, when the situation will be reviewed. Any change prior to this time will be posted on this site.
