19 October 2004: Malaria vaccine trial

The results of a clinical trial demonstrating that a candidate malaria vaccine has conferred protection in children were published in The Lancet on 16 October 2004.

The vaccine, developed by GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals in partnership with the Malaria Vaccine Initiative of the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health, was tested in a trial involving 2022 children in Mozambique.

The results are encouraging and have been welcomed by the World Health Organization.
