Avian influenza - India, Niger, Ukraine

It is the policy of NaTHNaC to post reports of avian influenza A/H5N1 outbreaks in animals once they have been officially reported to the Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). At present there are unconfirmed outbreaks of H5N1 avian influenza in several countries and reports on these outbreaks will be listed on the NaTHNaC Website as and when they are confirmed by the OIE.

The WHO has posted maps of the current epidemiology of avian influenza based on information from OIE and national governments.  A map delineating avian outbreaks since 1 January 2006 through 13 June 2006 can be viewed at: http://gamapserver.who.int/mapLibrary/Files/Maps/Global_SubN

India

On 5 June 2006, the OIE confirmed the presence of multiple outbreaks of H5N1 avian influenza in Jalgaon, Maharashtra and in Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh, India [1]. Outbreaks of H5N1 have been reported in Maharashtra previously but this is the first report of the presence of H5N1 in Madhya Pradesh [2]. Movement controls are in place around the affected areas and poultry within a 10km radius of the affected premises have been culled [1].

Niger

As of 7 July 2006, the OIE has confirmed an outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza in Gabi in the Maradi region of Niger. This is the first report of H5N1 in this area. The outbreak is thought to have begun on 25 April 2006 and involved backyard poultry. Movement controls are now in place and culling and vaccination are due to be undertaken [3].

Ukraine

The first outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza in birds in the Ukraine was reported to the OIE on 5 December 2005 in the autonomous region of Crimea [4]. Since then, further outbreaks have been reported in Crimea [5-6] as well as reports of outbreaks in the region of Kherson [7] and in a zoo in Odesa [8]. On 15 June 2006, the first outbreak of H5N1 in the Sumy region of the Ukraine was confirmed by the OIE. The outbreak occurred in the Burinskiy district and involved hens, ducks and geese. Movement controls are now in place and poultry has been culled in the affected area [9].
