10 May 2005: Meningococcal disease in India
The World Health Organization reported on 9 May 2005 an outbreak of meningococcal disease in Delhi , India [1].
Between 29 March and 10am 6 May 2005 , a total of 111 cases have been reported, including 15 deaths; Neisseria meningitidis serogroup A has been detected in the cerebrospinal fluid of five of the cases. Most cases have occurred in young adults and from Old Delhi.
Meningitis is endemic in Delhi and sporadic cases are known to occur. However, the last outbreak to occur in the city was in 1985.
WHO is working closely with national authorities in India to ensure early detection of cases, case management and to control the spread of disease. Close contacts are being offered chemoprophylaxis and high risk groups are being vaccinated.
Transmission of meningococcal disease occurs via the respiratory route from coughing and sneezing and is often associated with overcrowded conditions.
In view of the increased number of cases, and until further information becomes available, those travelling to Delhi who will be visiting friends and family, or will be working or living in close contact with the local population, can consider vaccination with the quadrivalent meningococcal meningitis ACW135Y vaccine. As more information becomes available, this advice will be updated.
