The European Health Insurance Card

From 1 January 2006, the E111 form became invalid and has been replaced by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

The EHIC card covers any medical treatment that becomes necessary during a stay in a country within the European Economic Area and Switzerland. The card gives access to state provided medical treatment on the same basis as an ‘insured’ person living in the country being visited.

Further information on the EHIC together with application details can be found on the Department of Health website.

Travellers are advised to take out private travel health insurance in addition to carrying an EHIC.
